The Masara Transporter Sacco has been providing scholarships to underprivileged students in the Masara community to help them achieve their educational goals. The initiative aims to address the triple threat effects of early marriage, early pregnancy, and new HIV infections that have taken root in the area, especially among young people. The Sacco has been awarding bursaries to more than 20 students during each term, with each student receiving a cheque of Sh2,000. The Sacco plans to continue awarding bursaries to 20 students each term during their four-year stay to prevent any school dropouts.
The Sacco Chairperson, Kelvin Ouma, stated that the fund was established to support orphans and bright students from needy backgrounds in Masara Ward-Suna West Sub County. He called upon community members and well-wishers to help less fortunate children in the area access education. The Sacco will continue to supplement other forms of bursaries and scholarships given by national and county governments, CDFs, and other organizations and institutions like the Wings to Fly program.
Masara town is renowned for its thriving mining activities. However, with increased financial activity, a number of social challenges have emerged, including prostitution, early pregnancies, early marriages, child labor, and new HIV infections, especially among young people. The Sacco’s efforts are aimed at boosting the education standards in the county and preventing minors from engaging in prostitution due to a lack of school fees.
The students who have received the bursaries expressed their gratitude and affirmed their intention to pursue their education goals to become important members of society. A parent who also benefited from the Sacco bursary urged other organizations and well-wishers in the area to come to the aid of girls by supporting their education.
