How Kenya National Police DT Sacco is Changing Lives Through CSR

UNITED FOR PROSPERITY

The Kenya National Police DT Sacco is transforming lives and creating a brighter future for all through Corporate Social Investment. They are bringing smiles to those in need, supporting the vulnerable in society, and uniting communities for prosperity.

The Sacco’s human-centred business model prioritizes people over profit and its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes are making a difference. The Sacco has designed its operations to meet the needs of its members and the community. It focuses on creating value for its members, from economic to social aspects, thus making tangible contributions toward creating a better world.

One of its notable CSR initiatives is the Sacco’s sponsorship and mentorship program for needy and vulnerable students. The Sacco supports the education dreams of children of its deceased members, especially police officers, helping them from secondary school to university. More than 281 students have benefited from the program, and many are now successful professionals, both in the country and abroad.

The Sacco recently organized a luncheon at the Safari Club Hotel in Nairobi, where the benefiting students were mentored. This event provided a valuable opportunity to inspire and guide the younger generation, demonstrating the Sacco’s commitment to nurturing future leaders and making a positive impact on communities

The Sacco not only sponsors students but also supports learning institutions in improving their infrastructure and environment to enhance learning outcomes. Utumishi Academies in Gilgil have greatly benefited from the Sacco’s funding. The Sacco has constructed laboratories, classrooms, and multipurpose halls in these schools. Recently, the Sacco leadership, led by the Hon. Secretary Mr. Lekoken, Directors Jamleck Gichobi, Joakims Awuondo, Andrew Koech, and CEO Solomon Angutsa, visited Utumishi Primary School for a site inspection to check on the progress of the construction of a multipurpose hall and four classrooms. Additionally, the Sacco donated laptops and tablets to Utumishi Boys Academy as rewards for student excellence.

Mr David Mategwa, the Sacco National Chairman, speaking during this year’s mentorship programme, emphasized the Sacco’s commitment to making a positive impact on society by offering practical solutions. “We have strong faith in the potential of our youth. Our goal is to encourage them to concentrate on their future, put in dedicated effort, and practice discipline. Hence, we host a yearly mentorship forum for the students we support in different secondary schools,” he said.

Dr. Cynthia Adinga, a beneficiary of the Sacco’s scholarship programme, conveyed her gratitude for the Kenya National Police DT Sacco sponsorship while speaking on the phone from Manchester, England to the students. She mentioned that the Sacco sponsored her education at Precious Blood Riruta, leading to her excellent performance in the KCSE exam and subsequent admission to the University of Nairobi for a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery. Currently pursuing further studies in Manchester, she highlighted the pivotal role the Sacco played in her academic and professional journey.

“The Sacco has truly made a positive impact in my life,” she noted.

Every year, the Sacco sets aside a budget to support the education of the needy and vulnerable in society, many of whom are now practising lawyers, doctors, and engineers, among others. “All our CSR activities are funded by the Sacco money; we do not have sponsors,” said Mr. Mategwa.

Nairobi Cooperatives’ Director, Dolphine Aremo, commended the Sacco for its CSR education initiative, which she said promotes a saving culture and financial discipline among young people.

Promoting Sports

The Kenya National Police DT Sacco is also actively involved in nurturing young talents and leads by example. It is the only Sacco that has funded the construction of a sports stadium – the Police Sacco Stadium, located in South C, Nairobi.

In addition, the Sacco sponsors successful teams such as the Kenya Police Football and GSU Volleyball teams. The Society staff also participate in football matches to support children with disabilities and cerebral palsy. The Sacco has made a significant impact on communities through its corporate social responsibility activities.

Kenya National Police Deposit-Taking SACCO is at the forefront of promoting the National Tree Planting Culture in the country. Spreading positivity is not easy. When spreading the news about a good thing it takes time. Lies spread like bushfires. Some misinformation regarding the Sacco has been circulating online.

“I want to reassure our members that our Sacco is the most stable in Africa, not just in Kenya, and the most well-capitalized Sacco on the continent. For instance, even if all our members were to withdraw their funds and pay off their loans, the Sacco would still retain its status as an entity with a core capital of Ksh 18.5 billion,” Mr Mategwa said.

He said that, contrary to misinformation being circulated online by a few rogue elements, the Sacco has been disbursing money to members without any challenges.

“We welcome the media to verify this information. The Sacco has already distributed Ksh15 billion in loans to members with no outstanding backlog,” he stated.

Mr Mategwa stated that the Sacco has taken measures to mitigate cyber-attacks. He assured members that digital banking platforms are safe and that all past challenges have been addressed.
