Imarika Foundation’s Sucess in Community Empowerment

The Imarika Foundation has made remarkable strides in its corporate social responsibility initiatives, benefiting 126 individuals through its diverse educational programs over the past five years. These programs include scholarships for school fees, mentorship, a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiative, digital literacy, and life skills training. Notably, from 2021 to 2023, 72 young people from Mombasa, Lamu, Tana River, Kilifi, and Kwale counties were awarded scholarships to pursue technical training under the TVET program.

In 2024, the Foundation achieved commendable milestones across its key focus areas: health, education, environmental conservation, and agribusiness. Chairperson Jackline M. Jumbe emphasized the Foundation’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with stakeholders, including individuals, corporate entities, government bodies, the private sector, and development partners, to enhance its programs.

A standout achievement has been the provision of free dignity packs to school-going girls in 41 schools across Kilifi’s seven sub-counties. This initiative has positively transformed students’ learning experiences, leading to behavioral improvements in the community, including a marked decline in teenage pregnancies and increased self-esteem among beneficiaries. The support has empowered girls to remain in school with confidence and dignity.

Last year, 15 students—7 females and 8 males—who faced financial barriers were able to sit for their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations thanks to the scholarship program, all of whom excelled and are now poised to continue their education in universities and TVET colleges.

Peter K. Angore, the outgoing Executive Director, highlighted their approach during the 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM), stating, “We proudly supported continuing high school students through scholarships, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder their dreams. Our mentorship program has been a source of guidance and inspiration, and our collaboration with Safaricom has led to the establishment of two digital literacy labs in Bamba and Chonyi sub-counties, equipping students with crucial technology skills.”

Imarika Foundation continues to lead in environmental conservation efforts, distributing tree seedlings to schools and communities while initiating tree planting campaigns. Furthermore, its agribusiness program has provided numerous small-scale farmers with opportunities to enhance their farm production, with plans to support at least 20 farmers in cassava cultivation and value chain development in 2025.

The Foundation’s health program has also made significant impacts, featuring reproductive health mentorship, dignity pack distribution, anti-jigger campaigns, and eye check-up camps across various locations. Key partners, including the County Government of Kilifi, Imarika DT Sacco, Safaricom Foundation, Serianu, and Zana Africa, have played a vital role in enabling the Foundation to fulfill its social obligations in 2024.

According to the Foundation’s financial statements for 2024, a total of Kshs 13.3 million was allocated to support various social and economic empowerment activities within the community. Contributing Kshs 6.2 million in cash and kind, donors and partners have been instrumental in these efforts, with Imarika DT Sacco standing out as the primary donor, contributing Kshs 12 million last year.

The Imarika Foundation remains dedicated to uplifting communities and enhancing the lives of those it serves through innovative programs and collaborative partnerships.
