Job Purpose

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Accountant will oversee day-to-day coordination of the SACCO’s finance function and ensure the accuracy, integrity and regulatory compliance of all financial records, reporting and controls. The role supports strategic financial planning, treasury management, SASRA/regulatory reporting, audit readiness and member account integrity.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Financial Reporting & Compliance
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements in accordance with applicable accounting standards and SACCO policy.
  • Prepare and submit regulatory returns and reports required by SASRA and other regulators, ensuring timeliness and accuracy.
  • Prepare management accounts and board packs (variance analysis, KPIs, ratio analysis, commentary) for Board review.
  1. Month-End Close & Reconciliations
  • Lead month-end close activities (posting journals, accruals, prepayments) and prepare reconciliations for general ledger accounts.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, MPesa / Paybill collections, suspense accounts, petty cash and inter-branch/internal accounts within the agreed SLA (e.g., first 4 working days of the following month).
  • Investigate and clear reconciling items and maintain reconciliation schedules.
  1. Loan Accounting & Portfolio Management
  • Maintain up-to-date loan ledgers, interest calculations, amortisation schedules, arrears registers and loan sub-ledgers.
  • Compute and book loan impairment / provisioning in line with policy and regulatory requirements. Prepare NPL reports and recommend provisioning and recovery actions.
  • Support loan product pricing, interest accruals and write-off processes (with required approvals and audit trails).
  1. Treasury, Cashflow & Liquidity Management
  • Monitor daily cash position, manage liquidity to meet member withdrawals and operational obligations.
  • Prepare cashflow forecasts, investment schedules and advise on short-term placements consistent with investment policy and risk limits.
  1. Payroll & Statutory Remittances
  • Prepare payroll, benefits and allowances; ensure accurate statutory deductions and timely remittance for PAYE, NSSF, NHIF/SHIF, Affordable Housing Levy and other statutory obligations.
  • Maintain payroll records, payslips and reconciliation of statutory payments.
  1. Budgeting, Planning & Forecasting
  • Lead the annual budgeting process and periodic re-forecasts. Produce variance analysis and advise management on cost control and revenue enhancement opportunities.
  1. Taxation & Regulatory Liaison
  • Ensure compliance with tax laws; prepare tax computations, returns and liaise with KRA and other authorities on tax matters.
  • Coordinate and respond to regulatory queries and inspections.
  1. Audit, Internal Controls & Governance
  • Act as primary liaison for internal and external auditors; prepare audit schedules, working papers and implement agreed audit recommendations.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal control environment: segregation of duties, approvals, reconciliations, and system access controls.
  • Maintain fixed assets register and ensure periodic physical verification.
  1. Systems, Data & Reporting
  • Maintain accounting systems (ERP) and ensure data integrity; lead system enhancements and automation for efficiency.
  • Generate management information, dashboards and financial analytis.
  • Ensure backups, retention and confidentiality of financial records in line with Data Protection Act and SACCO policy.
  1. AML/CFT, KYC & Fraud Prevention
  • Support compliance with AML/CFT and KYC requirements as they relate to finance operations; report suspicious transactions per policy.
  • Investigate and escalate suspected fraud, prepare evidence packs for investigations and support disciplinary or recovery action.
  1. Member Accounts & Service Support
  • Ensure accuracy of member savings, shares, and transactions posting; resolve member account variances with the operations team.
  • Support member account reconciliations, check-off processing, and ad hoc member queries escalated from front office.
  1. Policy, Procedures & Capacity Building
  • Review, update and draft finance policies, accounting manuals and SOPs to align with best practice and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide training and coaching to finance and relevant staff on procedures, systems, controls and compliance obligations.
  1. Procurement & Vendor Management
  • Review and verify invoices, supplier payments and ensure compliance with procurement policies; maintain supplier reconciliations.
  1. Ad-hoc & Board Support
  • Provide financial inputs into strategic projects, feasibility studies and business cases.
  • Participate in Board and committee meetings when requested and prepare financial briefings.
  1. Any other lawful duties assigned by the CEO or Board consistent with the role.

 

Qualifications & Experience

  • CPA (K) (full professional qualification) and ICPAK membership in good standing.
  • University degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related field is an added advantage.
  • Minimum 3 years’ relevant experience in accounting/finance roles within a regulated SACCO, bank, microfinance or deposit-taking financial institution.
  • Demonstrable experience with regulatory reporting (SASRA) and audit processes.
  • Strong practical knowledge of accounting software/ERPs-Microsoft Dynamics NAV, T24, QuickBooks, Sage or equivalent; advanced MS Excel skills required. Experience with Power BI or similar for dashboards is an advantage.

  • In-depth knowledge of financial accounting, IFRS9, management accounting and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and attention to detail.
  • Good communication and stakeholder management skills (Board, auditors, regulators).
  • Ability to prioritise, work to deadlines and perform under pressure.
  • Leadership and teamwork skills; ability to mentor junior staff.
  • Familiarity with AML/CFT, Data Protection obligations and work injury/insurance (WIBA) expectations.
