When Kenyans want to build their futures, they turn to their cooperatives

If there is one major takeaway from the recent SASRA 2025 quarterly report, it’s that the SACCO sector is no longer just a supplementary pillar of the economy—it is an absolute powerhouse. When the latest SASRA data landed on my desk, it confirmed a milestone we’ve been tracking closely: the industry growth. Its total assets surged past the Ksh 1.2 trillion mark. That 11.9% leap from last year isn’t just a win for the sector on paper. It represents the very real trust of millions of Kenyans.

With member deposits climbing to Ksh 831.9 billion and loan books expanding to Ksh 948.3 billion, it’s clear that when Kenyans want to build their futures, they turn to their cooperatives.

What I find most encouraging, however, is the financial discipline accompanying this massive growth. Saccos are lending more, but also recovering better. The Non-Performing Loan (NPL) ratio for Deposit-Taking SACCOs has dropped to an impressive 5.41%, inching ever closer to the 5% industry ideal.

Couple that with a staggering 74.5% liquidity ratio. SACCOs are highly liquid, incredibly stable, and ready to fund the next wave of economic growth. And that growth is already happening on the ground. In 2025 fourth quarter alone, over Ksh 135 billion flowed directly into the real economy.

We are seeing members aggressively financing land ownership, while seasonal surges in agriculture—specifically crop farming and animal production—prove that SACCOs remain the lifeblood of our food security and rural economies. But as the industry scales these unprecedented heights, the rules of the game must evolve.

With massive capital comes the need for tighter, more progressive regulation. At Co-op News, our goal is to do more than just report the numbers. We are here to empower you to make informed, strategic investment decisions in a rapidly shifting landscape. Co-op News, Invest in the Best Saccos!
