YOU, OUR CONCERN

Across the undulating ridges and verdant valleys of Kisii County, where the rich, red volcanic soil breathes life into the land, a quiet revolution is taking place. In this hilly topography, characterized by lush greenery and a patchwork of thriving farms, the agricultural landscape is not just a scenery, but an engine of growth. From the sprawling tea and coffee estates to the robust harvests of bananas, maize, and vegetables, local farmers are turning their toil into prosperity. At the heart of this transformation is Wakenya Pamoja Sacco, a financial pillar that is financing dreams and empowering residents to diversify their income.

It is not just the farmers who are reaping the benefits. The county’s burgeoning business sector has found the Sacco to be a reliable partner, enabling entrepreneurs to actualize their goals through a human-interest business model and tailored service delivery. By leveraging modern technology, the Sacco has transcended geographical barriers, making its financial solutions accessible countrywide and even beyond Kenya’s borders.

Despite a challenging economic climate, Wakenya Pamoja Sacco remained steadfast in its mission to improve the financial well-being of its members throughout the 2025 fiscal year. This focus yielded impressive results, with the Sacco registering steady growth in its membership base, total savings, and loan portfolio.

The 2025 Annual Report and Financial Statements reveal that the Sacco continued to provide affordable credit, enabling members to invest in diverse sectors, including business, education, housing, and value-added projects within the agricultural industry.

“We have significantly enhanced our systems to ensure members access financial services more efficiently and conveniently,” said Mr. Francis Ayieko, HSC, Wakenya Pamoja Sacco Board of Directors Chairman. Speaking during the Sacco’s Annual Delegates Meeting (ADM) held recently at the Kisii Agricultural Training Centre, Mr. Ayieko attributed this success to the core values of transparency and accountability. “I thank the Board, management, and staff for their hard work and professionalism, which ensures the Sacco always works in the best interest of our members.”

Mr. Ayieko noted that providing affordable credit remains a cornerstone of the Sacco’s mission. Last year alone, the institution disbursed loans totaling Ksh953 million, supporting the education, housing, and agricultural value chains of its members. “Our loan portfolio continues to grow while we maintain strictly responsible lending practices,” he added.

The Sacco’s reach is also expanding. Membership grew by 5.4% last year to reach 148,039, boosting the capital base and strengthening the Society’s ability to serve its members. This growth prompted an amendment to the Sacco’s by-laws to better accommodate a diverse membership drawn from all sectors of the economy. The Sacco is also deepening its commitment to inclusion by bringing farmers’ cooperative societies on board and ensuring women and youth are represented as delegates.

Overall, the Sacco’s financial indicators in 2025 remained strong: member savings rose to Ksh952.59 million, while share capital increased to Ksh624.7 million. “We are seeing a deep commitment from our members to grow their savings and investments,” Mr. Ayieko noted, adding that the Sacco is also focused on building its institutional reserves to ensure long-term stability.

The Sacco’s impact has not gone unnoticed by local leadership. Mr. Cyrus Nyabicha, the Kisii County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Water, Environment, Natural Resources, Energy, and Climate, graced the ADM and noted how the institution has changed lives.

“We are encouraging our people to join Saccos, save, and access loans for development. The County Government supports Saccos in their role as drivers of socio-economic empowerment,” said Mr. Nyabicha. He lauded the Sacco for embracing mobile technology, noting, “This is the way forward for service delivery—where members can use their phones to access financial services at any time.”

Echoing these sentiments, Mr. Elijah Obwori, the CECM for Agriculture, Fisheries, Livestock Development, and Irrigation, commended the Sacco for its support of the agricultural sector.

“The Sacco’s diverse products for farmers and cooperative societies are making a tangible difference. We have seen it support coffee farming and value addition throughout the county,” Mr. Obwori said. He highlighted the Sacco’s role in helping young farmers embrace technology, noting that modernizing operations is key to remaining relevant to a digital-savvy generation. He lauded Wakenya Pamoja for supporting the coffee, banana, avocado, and pyrethrum value chains, which have led to a significant expansion of pyrethrum growing in the region.

Wakenya Pamoja Sacco CEO, Mr. Isaac Omwenga, thanked the County Government for fostering an enabling environment. He revealed that the Sacco has introduced new, enticing products designed specifically to attract the youth and help them achieve financial independence.

“We are currently in the process of developing a new Strategic Plan,” Mr. Omwenga announced. “The Sacco remains committed to achieving the highest levels of customer satisfaction through continuous innovation and a high regard for our members and stakeholders.”
