The co-operative sector is very vibrant, with over 28,000 registered co-operative societies, a membership of more than 18 million co-operators; an asset base of over Ksh1.5 Trillion; mobilized savings and deposits in excess of over Ksh1 Trillion and a loan portfolio of over Ksh980 billion. The sector employs more than 500,000 Kenyans directly and another three million indirectly.
Government understands the important role co-operatives play in socio-economic development, we adopted the Value Chain approach in our effort to transform the economy. Co-operative model will drive growth in a sustainable manner.
Co-operatives play an important role in aggregation, primary processing, transport, marketing, savings mobilization and financial inclusion, with loud footprints in all sectors of the economy.”
