Empowering Sacco members in Nakuru through financial literacy

Residents of Nakuru County are being equipped with cooperative education and training to improve the performance of Saccos. This move is part of the county government’s efforts to prioritize providing better services to satisfy members efficiently and effectively. Recently, a training session was held for Jamii Cooperative and Savings Credit Society members in Nakuru City at the Kenya National Library Hall. Kibet Kurgat, the Chief Officer for Cooperatives, reiterated the county administration’s commitment to fully supporting such training because it is a basis for improving Saccos’ operations.

Mr. Kurgat urged residents to join Saccos, emphasizing that it is the only way to mobilize savings and credit through innovative products and services in a dynamic business environment, which will ensure optimum returns. He noted that the county government is committed to channeling one billion shillings annually to boost cooperatives’ economic activities and ensure that as many people as possible are members of at least one Sacco society.

Mr. Kurgat also expressed his concern that the Nakuru residents’ urge and obligation to join cooperative societies in the 1970s-80s, which made Nakuru an economic powerhouse and uplifted other parts of the country, was floored by mismanagement and corruption. However, he assured that the golden years of cooperatives that enabled farmers’ children to get a good education without any stress of school fees could be easily revived because of the fond memories of abundance and economic success achieved throughout the nation.
