Governor Provides Ksh 42.54M to Farmers, Launches 20 Ward-Based Saccos

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has demonstrated her commitment to supporting farmers in the county, issuing a check worth Ksh. 42.54 million to 204 groups involved in various agricultural value chain projects. This funding, provided through the Wezesha Kirinyaga program, will enable farmers to increase production and productivity, creating food security and reducing poverty in the county. Governor Waiguru has identified nine agricultural value chains, including dairy, avocado, tomato, chicks, beekeeping, dairy goats, fish, pig rearing, and egg hatching, that will benefit from the funding.

Additionally, 20 ward-based multi-value chain farmers’ Savings and Credit Cooperatives (Saccos) have been launched, providing farmers with affordable operational capital, savings and credit services, market information, and production practices.

The governor emphasized the role of cooperatives in enabling farmers to pool financial and technical resources, spread their costs, and leverage collective members’ experiences.

Furthermore, the Saccos will provide e-voucher programs for subsidized farm inputs, crop and livestock insurance, and market the farmers’ produce. This comprehensive funding is aimed at increasing productivity in agriculture, which is critical to reducing poverty and positioning farmers as the primary suppliers of raw materials for upcoming processing industries in the Sagana Industrial Park.

With this funding, farmers in Kirinyaga County will be able to transition from subsistence to commercial farming, accessing affordable operational capital and market information. This will enable them to increase their income from farming and uplift their standard of living. The Wezesha Kirinyaga program has already transformed the lives of many farmers, and the Ward-based Saccos will provide timely economic intervention for farmers in the county. Overall, Governor Waiguru’s commitment to supporting farmers in Kirinyaga County is commendable, and her efforts to create food security and reduce poverty are praiseworthy.

The funding provided through the Wezesha Kirinyaga program and the launch of 20 ward-based multi-value chain farmers’ Savings and Credit Cooperatives (Saccos) will enable farmers to increase productivity and production, creating a better future for themselves and their families.
