In a noble cause, the Sacco donated three water tanks with a capacity to hold 30,000 litres of water, offering relief to students who have long endured the harsh realities of drought and water scarcity. Lunga-Lunga Sub-county in Kwale County is one of the coastal areas that has been relentlessly battered by the merciless tides of recurring droughts. Often, the burden of this crisis weighs heavily upon the educational institutions, which grapple with insufficient resources.
Hazina Sacco’s water project is poised to alleviate this perennial water shortage, ushering in an era of clean, accessible water for the school and enhancing the overall learning environment.
Mr Evans Kibagendi, the National Chairman of Hazina Sacco, said this initiative is part of the institution’s broader commitment to corporate social responsibility programs across the country.
“Hazina Sacco is dedicated to giving back to the community in various ways that empower people to elevate their lives. Each year, we implement diverse projects across the nation, and this year, our members in Kwale County have chosen to bestow their generosity upon Lunga-Lunga Secondary School. We take pride in enhancing the school’s capacity for storing clean water,” said Mr Kibagendi.
Hailing this initiative, Kwale Governor H.E. Fatuma Achani welcomed the leadership and management of Hazina Sacco when they met at her office, praising their foresight and commitment. “This is a remarkable initiative, and we are delighted to partner with Hazina Sacco as we strive to uplift our communities. The County Government of Kwale is devoted to enhancing learning outcomes in our schools,” the Governor said.
Mr Kibagendi noted that the water project, estimated at over KSh 400,000, exemplifies the dedication of Hazina Sacco members from Kwale County. He urged residents to join the Sacco to benefit from the financial empowerment it offers.
Joy radiated from Hamphrey Ngana, the principal of Lunga-Lunga Secondary School, who expressed gratitude for Hazina Sacco’s benevolence, noting the vital water project will greatly benefit boarding students.
“Water has long posed a significant challenge to our school. Although we have a borehole, its water is saltier than the ocean itself. Hazina Sacco has truly delivered a tremendous benefit to us,” he said, reflecting the relief felt throughout the institution.
Prof. Balozi Bekuta, the school’s Board of Management Chairperson, highlighted the importance of the water tanks, heralding their potential to support students and their academic endeavours. “We extend our heartfelt thanks to the management of Hazina Sacco for this project. It is a lifeline we needed. Hazina is a remarkable Sacco, and I am inspired to join today,” he said.
Mr Dickson Okungu, the Sacco Chief Executive Officer (CEO), said that this initiative marks the dawn of a promising partnership with the community in Lunga-Lunga, Kwale County. “This water project is an expression of our gratitude to our members for their patronage of our services and products. Our extensive enrollment across the county has allowed us to identify and support this school,” he said.
Echoing a similar sentiment, Mr Matani Njama, Kwale County Sacco Chair, urged residents to embrace Hazina, highlighting the array of affordable credit facilities and diversified savings accounts available for them.
Mr Ibrahim Ndegwa, the Lunga-Lunga sub-county administrator representing the Governor at the event, affirmed the county government’s readiness to collaborate with all development partners, urging other corporate entities to take inspiration from Hazina Sacco’s example in uplifting communities. “This endeavour is not merely about water; it is a lifeline that breathes new life into both the students and the community, fostering a profound sense of hope and opportunity,” he said.

Last year, the Sacco delivered a complete ablution block to Tutu Primary School in Kiambu and donated 60 lockers, chairs, and 190 mathematical sets to Lugala Secondary School in Kakamega County.
