Key President Uhuru’s recent appointments in Co-op Sector

As the curtain comes down on President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, he has made fundamental changes that will affect the affairs of the cooperatives sector for the next three years.

Key among these appointments is one by the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Co-operatives Peter Munya, who picked George Murathe to be a Member and Chairperson of the SACCO Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA), for three (3) years, with effect from the 6th July 2022.

Murathe replaces John Munuve, appointed as a non-executive director and chairman of SASRA in 2018. Before this appointment, Munuve served as a Member of Parliament for the Mwingi North constituency between 2013 to 2017. Munuve resigned as Saccos Societies Regulatory Authority chairperson after serving for five years.

He is vying for the Mwingi North MP seat in this year’s General Elections.

CS Peter Munya has also re-appointed Beatrice M Kimemia as the Chairperson of the Co-operative Tribunal, for three years w.e.f 30th May 2022. Kimemia was first appointed to this position by CS Munya in February 2019.

This Tribunal is a specialized court established under section 77 of the Cooperative Societies Act Cap 490 and has unlimited jurisdiction over disputes involving cooperative societies. Its decisions can only be overturned by the High Court.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed Hassan Reche as Chairperson of the Board of New Kenya Planters Co-operative Union(KPCU) for three years with effect from 5th July 2022.

Reche replaces Henry Gichui Kinyua, appointed by President Kenyatta in December 2019 to lead the revival of KPCU, whose operations had ground to a halt due to mismanagement.
