Community-based Saccos in Kilifi County have benefited from an Agripreneur Model initiated by the county government and supported by the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP). The county governor, Gideon Maitha Mung’aro, recently launched the Agripreneur Model and distributed cheques amounting to Ksh 20.7 million to community-based Saccos.
In addition, seven value chain-based Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) received grant cheques totaling Ksh 4.9 million. The governor oversaw the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) between these FPOs and the County Government. The organizations include:
– Mibibo Farmers’ Cooperative Society (Cashew Value Chain) in Matsangoni
– Pwani Ufanisi Farmers’ Cooperative Society Ltd (Cashew VC) in Kiwandani
– Malindi Farmers’ Cooperative Society Ltd (Mango Value Chain) in Malindi Town
– Manyeso Dairy Farmers’ Cooperative Society Ltd (Dairy VC) in Gede
– Adu Dairy Farmers’ Cooperative Society Ltd (Dairy VC) in Adu Centre
– Magarini Poultry Farmers’ Society Ltd (Chicken VC) in Gongoni
– Jibana Farmers’ Cooperative Society Ltd (Apiculture VC) in Mwandaza
Each of these FPO cooperatives will receive a grant of Ksh 700,000, which is expected to be used for service automation, member mobilization, and purchasing basic office equipment. Additionally, seventeen Ward Community Saccos will receive an inclusion grant of Ksh 1 million each, while seven existing Saccos will receive Ksh 900,000 each.
The Agripreneur Model initiative, supported by NAVCDP, targets five key value chains in Kilifi County: local chicken, dairy, cashew nuts, mangoes, and apiculture.
