Metropolitan Sacco members to hold demonstrations

Members of the Metropolitan National Sacco have announced plans to hold peaceful demonstrations on 4th November 2023. In a notice addressed to the OCS Kiambu Police Station, they said they would hold a procession and present memoranda, with the intention of presenting petitions to the County Commissioner and other state offices.

The processions are scheduled to take place at Kiambu town from 9:00 am, commencing at the KIST (Kenya Institute of Science and Technology) stage and ending at the Metropolitan National Sacco Building. The notice, signed by Kariuki Wanjiku, the procession organizing secretary and already circulating online, requested security to ensure that the demonstrations are peaceful and orderly.

The Metropolitan National Sacco has been facing severe liquidity problems, as revealed by an external audit carried out by the Office of Commissioner for Cooperatives. The audit implicated 58 individuals in the loss of Ksh7.7 billion, with some directors, managers, and members allegedly defrauding the Sacco. This has left thousands of members frustrated and disappointed with the once-thriving giant Sacco.

The State has sent out letters notifying the individuals of its intention to surcharge them, as detailed in a letter dated 17th April 2023 and signed by David K Obonyo, Commissioner for Cooperative Development.
