Banana farmers in Taita Taveta County are set to gain from a new processing plant, thanks to the collaboration between the Micro and Small Enterprises Support Programme Trust (MSPT) and the county government. This partnership aims to expedite the completion and operation of a previously stalled banana processing factory, which will enhance market access and value addition for both fresh and processed bananas, ultimately stimulating economic growth in the region.
ORANA, a Danish company specializing in food and beverage processing, has been operational in East Africa since 2018. It will take charge of securing a reliable market for banana products, addressing issues related to the inconsistency of the fresh banana market. Taita Taveta County officials believe the region has significant potential to emerge as Kenya’s leading organic banana exporter.
During a trilateral meeting involving MSPT, ORANA, and county representatives, Governor Andrew Mwadime reaffirmed the county’s commitment to the project. He emphasized the importance of developing processing facilities for other crops as well as enhancing agricultural value addition throughout the county. With MSPT’s program concluding in December, ORANA is preparing to lead the banana value chain project in close partnership with the county government.
Rebecca Amukhoye, MESPT CEO, highlighted the successes achieved through MSPT’s initiatives and stressed the need for a smooth transition, particularly in ensuring the county takes over some of the responsibilities previously handled by MSPT. She encouraged the county government to enable ORANA to continue supporting over 2,000 farmers and to extend training programs for additional producers.
Priscilla Nzalu, Project Coordinator for ORANA, expressed gratitude for the county’s improvements in infrastructure, including feeder roads, electricity, and water systems. “We want the factory operational as soon as possible. We hope the county will assist us in speeding up this process,” she stated.
Additionally, the county is working with Taita Taveta University to advance banana tissue culture, noting progress in this area as certified seedlings have been successfully moved to greenhouses. This initiative aims to ensure that farmers receive high-quality planting materials.
