Nyamira Saccos Receive Ksh20m World Bank Boost for Agribusiness

Nyamira Saccos Receive Ksh20m World Bank Boost for Agribusiness

Twenty farmer cooperatives in Nyamira County have received Ksh20 million in funding to scale up their agribusiness ventures, courtesy of a partnership between the National Government and the World Bank.

The funds were disbursed under the National Agricultural and Rural Inclusive Growth Project (NARIGP), an initiative designed to support organized farmer groups within priority value chains, including dairy, poultry, bananas, and vegetables.

Speaking during the disbursement at the county headquarters, Agriculture CECM Dr. Peris Mong’are said the grant aims to revolutionize local agriculture and tackle poverty.

“Agriculture is the backbone of Nyamira’s economy, supporting over 80 percent of our residents. This programme is instrumental in ensuring food security and economic stability for the rural population,” Dr. Mong’are said.

She noted that the beneficiaries had undergone training on financial management to ensure the grants translate into long-term impact. She challenged the Saccos to mobilize more farmers, noting that collective bargaining power attracts better support from development partners.
Dr. Mokaya Osoro, the Project Coordinator, said the initiative aims to move farmers beyond subsistence by encouraging local processing.

“This programme is not just about short-term aid; it is about building sustainable agricultural enterprises that can compete regionally and internationally,” Dr. Osoro said, adding that the funding would support value addition in bananas, coffee, and avocados, creating new revenue streams and jobs.Trade and Cooperatives CECM Benard Maina hailed the World Bank partnership as a transformative opportunity for rural communities to professionalize their farming activities.

Denis Nyachieng’a, a Township Tuner Community Sacco official, welcomed the support, stating that the capital injection would help members launch farming startups and increase production.
