Planning for Retirement: Start Early, Retire Strong

Financial experts are sounding a clear warning to young professionals: the best time to begin planning for retirement is not tomorrow, or after a promotion, but the very moment you start earning an income. Bill Nelson, Planning Excellence Lead Consultant at Northwestern Mutual, stressed the importance of early action, noting that delaying retirement planning can prove costly in the long run.

“Whether you’re just starting your career or have been working for years, the best time to start saving for retirement is now,” Nelson said in a recent financial guidance report. “The earlier you start, the more time your money has to grow, and compound interest can turn small, consistent contributions into a significant nest egg over decades.”

According to Nelson, many people underestimate the advantage of time. For instance, an individual who begins saving just KSh 5,000 monthly at age 22 will retire with far more wealth than someone who starts the same savings plan at 32, even if the latter contributes larger amounts later. This, he explained, is the unmatched power of compounding.

Recent surveys have revealed that retirees often regret not starting earlier, with many wishing they had contributed steadily from their first paycheck. Nelson noted that beginning early not only eases the financial burden later in life but also builds financial discipline.

“Consistency matters just as much as the amount you save,” he added. “Even if you can only set aside a small portion of your salary in the beginning, what’s important is to start. You can always increase your contributions as your income grows.”

Experts agree that no matter one’s career stage, starting now is better than waiting. But for those just entering the workforce, the message is crystal clear: the earlier you begin retirement planning, the more secure your financial future will be.
