From humble beginnings to remarkable achievements, Taifa DT Sacco has set the bar high in the financial industry. During the 50th Anniversary celebration in 2024, attended by the Board of Directors, Delegates, Staff, Members, and Guests, Taifa Sacco celebrated its steadfast dedication to transforming lives and building a better future for all.
Founded five decades ago, the Sacco’s visionary founders sought to create a financial institution that truly empowers its members in their socio-economic pursuits. Since its inception in 1974, Taifa Deposit-Taking Sacco has evolved into a beacon of hope and a world-class financial entity, making a substantial impact in the community.
The 50th Anniversary celebrations coincided with the grand opening of the Sacco’s new headquarters, marking a significant milestone and a commitment to enhancing its customer experience. This state-of-the-art plaza symbolizes Taifa Sacco’s ascent within the cooperative movement and showcases its achievements over the years, promising an even brighter future.
The plaza was inaugurated by Nyeri Governor H.E. Mutahi Kahiga, who hailed it as a striking new landmark in Nyeri town. This breathtaking structure stands out against the town’s landscape, transforming the skyline and becoming an indelible part of the town’s character. Designed to optimize space and foster productivity, this headquarters enhances Taifa Sacco’s brand visibility, customer satisfaction, and employee experience. By incorporating open workspaces and modern amenities, the Sacco affirms its commitment to providing exceptional working conditions for its dedicated team of staff.
“This state-of-the-art headquarters stands as a testament to your growth, resilience, and commitment to delivering exceptional service to your members. It marks the beginning of a new era and will serve as a hub of operations and innovation for the Sacco, reinforcing your mission to provide quality service and support to your members,” said Governor Kahiga.
The Governor noted that Taifa Sacco has been instrumental in shaping the socio-economic fabric of Nyeri County and stands at the top of the county’s co-operative movement, which currently has over 198 active co-operative societies with a membership of over 500,000 and an annual turnover exceeding Ksh 8 billion. The Co-operative sector is a significant driver of economic growth, employment, and poverty alleviation.
“Taifa Sacco plays a pivotal role in ensuring that our people access financial services that would otherwise be out of reach,” he said.
H.E. Kahiga was accompanied by Deputy Governor David Kinaniri, Kieni MP Hon. Njoroge Wainaina, Trade CECM Diana Kendi, Education CECM Margaret Macharia, and Mr Peter Theuri, the Nyeri County Director for Co-operatives, amongst other guests.
Since its rebranding from Nyeri Farmers Sacco to Taifa DT Sacco Society Ltd in 2006, it has experienced immense growth. It has re-engineered its products and services to effectively serve a broader range of economic sectors and geographical areas. The Sacco’s growth strategy focuses on deploying modern digital service delivery solutions, enhancing human capital, and modernizing physical infrastructure, all with the goal of empowering members in their socio-economic endeavours. Through innovative banking solutions, Taifa Sacco is transforming lives.
“Taifa Sacco now boasts 180,000 active members from diverse economic sectors across the country and beyond. Notably, about 500 of these members continue to utilize our services while in the Diaspora, demonstrating our enhanced digital capacity. Currently, our asset base stands at Ksh. 5.2 billion, with the potential to double every five years,” stated Mr. James Giting’a, Chairman, Board of Directors.
The Society is currently implementing its 2021-2025 strategic plan, which has positioned it as a significant player in the financial sector, elevating it to the Tier-1 category of large-sized DT Saccos.

From empowering farmers and supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises to building homes, educating children, and covering hospital bills and other emergencies, Taifa Sacco has remained a reliable partner for all seasons. We are also grateful to our over 200 dedicated employees, led by our CEO, Mr. Samuel Ngugi, for their hard work,” said Mr. Giting’a.
Having celebrated 50 years of excellence in service delivery, the Sacco fraternity looks to the future with optimism.

Taifa DT Sacco has distinguished itself by providing reliable and efficient financial services to its members. It strives to maintain a high level of reliability that all members can depend on.
The Sacco operates 19 fully integrated service centres in Nyeri, Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nakuru, and Kirinyaga counties, with plans to expand into Kiambu and Murang’a counties. Additionally, Taifa Sacco has made banking easier, faster, and more convenient by embracing technology. Its alternative banking channels include mobile banking (*475#), Paybill (930642), internet banking, ATMs, Sacco agency outlets, chequebooks, electronic transfers, and real-time settlement tills, ensuring all members—whether in cities or villages—are financially empowered.
The Sacco has also maximized member value by establishing subsidiaries such as Taifa Housing Co-operative Society, which offers affordable land to members, and Taifa Bima Insurance Agency, which provides various insurance covers. Through a partnership with GIZ under the Energizing Development (EnDev) and Sustainable Energy for Smallholder Farmers (SEFFA) programs, the Sacco has been providing affordable credit services that help members acquire solar-powered technologies, including solar lighting, heating, cooling, and irrigation.
