Why Butula MP wants Residents to Join Cooperatives

Residents of Butula have been urged to join cooperative societies to benefit from the many grants and empowerment funds offered by both national and county governments. This call was made by Butula Member of Parliament Joseph Oyula, who recently issued a Sh4 million Uwezo Fund to 20 groups at the Butula Deputy County Commissioner grounds.

In his address, Oyula emphasized the importance of investing earnings in constructive businesses as a means of pulling themselves out of poverty. He also highlighted the availability of low-interest loans and grants from the government, which are more favourable compared to other financial institutions.

To this end, the MP urged residents to embrace the habit of saving and purposeful borrowing from the Uwezo Fund and other government sources to improve their living standards. He expressed concern that lack of sensitization has denied people massive opportunities to get grants, leading them to fall into the hands of loan sharks.

To address this, Oyula announced plans to launch a grassroots campaign to educate residents on sound financial literacy to boost their saving habits. He also revealed plans to lead a tree-planting campaign to conserve water catchment areas and mitigate the effects of global warming.

Oyula further noted that Butula is rich in edible oils cultivation, with residents having the potential to produce groundnuts, sesame, and sunflower on a large scale. He called on the government to open up the constituency to find ready markets, which would boost the morale of residents engaged in this kind of farming.
