Nyeri Women Representative Rahab Mukami has encouraged farmers to form co-operatives to enjoy low-interest rates when depositing or borrowing money.
The Women’s Representative urged farmers in the region to consider the formation of co-operatives in order to boost the dairy farming industry. She emphasized the numerous benefits of forming co-operatives, such as increased bargaining power, access to credit and loans, and better market opportunities. The dairy farming industry in Nyeri has been facing a number of challenges, including high production costs and low prices for their products. However, she said farmers can better address these challenges and work towards a more sustainable and profitable industry by coming together and forming co-operatives. The Women Representative’s call to action has been met with positive responses from farmers in the region, who are eager to explore the benefits of co-operative farming.
Speaking during the Annual General Meeting of Gakindu dairy farmers in Mukurweini Constituency, Nyeri County, Mukami also delivered a milk cooler worth Ksh 550,000 to enable farmers to store their milk and reduce spoilage.
She urged dairy farmers to put more effort into the industry as it is one of the most popular enterprises in Nyeri County.
Farmers who produce over 1900 litres of milk daily had requested a milk cooler to facilitate milk storage. Mukami acknowledged that farmers are facing various challenges, particularly in access to raw materials to increase milk production, but she assured them of her commitment to ensuring they can support themselves fully. She also thanked Wakulima Dairy, under the leadership of Muhika Mutahi, for their continued support and milk buying from local farmers.
The farmers present thanked the County Women’s Rep for the cooling machine, describing it as a big boost to their dairy farming business.
