Why Sacco Loans Remain More Affordable Than Bank Credit

Why Cooperative Loans Remain More Affordable Than Bank Credit

As commercial credit costs rise across Kenya’s financial landscape, Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs) have become the preferred alternative for affordable borrowing. With banks and microfinance lenders often raising interest rates in response to Central Bank signals, many households and small businesses are turning to SACCOs for their lower effective costs and member-focused terms.

At the heart of this trend is the principle of member ownership. SACCOs fund loans by mobilizing deposits from their own members rather than relying on expensive external market borrowing. This contrasts sharply with commercial banks, which face higher funding costs and regulatory overheads that are ultimately passed on to the borrower.

Furthermore, SACCOs typically structure interest on a reducing-balance basis with transparent rates. While commercial bank rates fluctuate with the central lending rate, SACCOs generally offer stable rates between 12% and 14%. When paired with annual dividends or rebates, the true cost of borrowing becomes even more competitive.

This affordability has sparked a notable shift in borrowing patterns. Recent surveys such Finaccess Report, identify SACCOs as the primary credit channel for many Kenyans, particularly for essential needs such as education, small business capital, and home financing.

However, the surge in cooperative lending brings its own challenges. Regulators suchas SASRA note that in some SACCOs, loan portfolios are now outpacing deposits, signaling potential liquidity pressures as the demand for affordable credit grows.

Nevertheless, for millions of Kenyan savers and borrowers, cooperative loans remain a vital financial lifeline, embodying the ethos of shared benefit and economic empowerment.
