Wakenya Pamoja Sacco Society (WPS) is a leading medium-tier Deposit-taking Sacco making significant strides in Kenya’s financial landscape. With a remarkable growth trajectory, the Sacco is on the verge of surpassing Ksh2 billion in total assets, thanks to its innovative approach to digital banking and commitment to serving its members.
The Sacco Supervision Annual Report for 2023 showcases WPS’s success, reflecting its strategic vision and dedication to member service. In 2023, WPS reported total assets of Ksh1.73 billion and total deposits of Ksh0.84 billion. The Sacco disbursed over Ksh950 million in loans, which has positively impacted the economic well-being of its over 123,000 members.
This growth was largely driven by the launch of Wakenya M-Cash, a cutting-edge mobile banking platform. This user-friendly app and USSD code (*346#) offer members seamless access to a wide range of financial services, including quick loans (E-loans), bill payments, savings, and withdrawals, available 24/7. Developed in partnership with a leading fintech firm, the platform prioritizes security and reliability.
“Our main agenda is to enhance the socio-economic welfare of our members,” states the Sacco chairman Mr. Francis Ayieko. “The mobile lending product has transformed many lives.”
WPS’s strategic pillars include membership and product uptake, operational efficiency, non-performing loan management, human capital management, and corporate governance, all of which ensure sustainable growth. The Sacco’s dedication to its members goes beyond technology, as its core values of customer focus, integrity, teamwork, creativity, and professionalism underpin every aspect of its operations.
Additionally, WPS actively collaborates with development partners, such as the Government of Kenya, Cooperative Bank of Kenya, CIC Insurance, and CIDR, to leverage partnerships for capacity building and knowledge sharing. This collaboration is exemplified by the successful WPS-CIDR Microfinance Unit, which provides essential credit facilities to small businesses and farmers in Kisii, Gucha, and Nyamira districts. WPS further demonstrates its commitment to community development by acting as an agent for the Coffee Development Fund (CODF) and disbursing Ksh10 million to coffee farmers in Gusiiland.
With a robust branch network that extends throughout Kisii County and beyond, WPS is more than just a financial institution; it serves as a catalyst for economic empowerment, promoting financial inclusion and positively impacting the lives of its members. The Sacco’s impressive growth and commitment to innovation have solidified its position as a leader in the Kenyan cooperative banking sector, setting a new standard for inclusive and accessible financial services.
WPS has become a case study for rapid growth and digital transformation as a thriving medium-tiered Deposit-taking Sacco (DT Sacco). It has evolved beyond its initial focus on tea and coffee farmers, now offering value chain financing, microfinance, business development financing, and asset financing. Licensed as a DT Sacco in 2011, it operates under the Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA).
“We have done our best to ensure our members receive top-notch financial services that meet their needs anytime, anywhere, and securely,” says Mr. Isaac Omwenga, the Sacco’s Chief Executive Officer. He adds that WPS is dedicated to efficiently serving farmers and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with a solid strategy in place to offer quality and competitive financial products and services.
For over 48 years, the Sacco has continually evolved to provide relevant and inclusive financial solutions to its members. It has improved members’ livelihoods by offering a broad range of financial services, striving to transform their experiences and achieve sustainable growth and value.
