KUSCCO, USAID partner with Co-ops

The County Government of Uasin Gishu has started discussions with the Kenya Union of Savings and Credit Cooperatives (KUSCCO) in an arrangement to promote and strengthen the cooperative movement in the county.

Acting Chief Officer for Cooperatives and Enterprise Development Nixon Cheplong, Director Enterprise Fund Isaac Lagat, and Cooperative Commissioner Roselyne Rae recently hosted a KUSCCO delegation at the county headquarters.

Cheplong noted that the areas of partnership include financial credit facilities to Saccos and the use of Information Communication Technology in managing confidential information to help in capacity building.

KUSCCO, apart from assisting cooperative societies in starting mortgage schemes, will also help attract more youth to their membership.

KUSCCO Branch Manager, Alton Ochuma, said they are working with other stakeholders to grow and strengthen cooperatives across the county.

Meanwhile, Nakuru County Government and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) have partnered in training officials from seven coffee cooperative societies to improve governance and accountability in the sector.

County Chief Officer of Cooperatives Martin Kagai said the county is also collaborating with the national government to strengthen cooperatives as the preferred vehicles for development, adding that good corporate governance, innovation and adoption of best practices were critical for the continued growth of the cooperative movement.
