Top counties with the highest number of saccos

The head offices of regulated SACCOs in Kenya are distributed across 40 counties, with Nairobi having the highest number of head offices at 177, accounting for 49.30% of all regulated SACCOs’ head offices.

Kiambu, Mombasa, Meru, and Nyeri follow Nairobi with 31, 16, 13, and 9 head offices, respectively. Seven counties, including Makueni, Turkana, Tana River, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, and Isiolo, do not host any regulated SACCO head offices.

However, they are served by branch networks of other regulated SACCOs. According to the Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA), 109 regulated SACCOs have established branch networks in various parts of the country, representing 30.36% of all regulated SACCOs.

Nairobi and Kiambu have the highest number of registered cooperative societies, according to the Nationwide Co-Operative Sector Baseline Survey.

On the other hand, Garissa, Narok, and Tana River Counties have the highest percentage of financially excluded adults at 34.3%, 31.2%, and 26.7%, respectively, according to the 2022 FinAccess Household Survey-COUNTY PERSPECTIVE published by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK). In Garissa County, only 3.8% of the adult population use bank accounts, and 0.3% can obtain a Sacco loan, while none have access to microfinance banks.
