Kenya Ready to Host ICURN and SACCA conferences

Preparations are underway for the 2024 SACCA Congress, a highly anticipated event in the financial cooperative community. With over 2000 participants expected from around the globe, this promises to be an impactful gathering that will elevate the country’s position as a leader in promoting the cooperative movement. Set to take place in October in Naivasha, the SACCA Congress marks its 24th year as Africa’s leading financial cooperative forum, with the Kenyan government pledging full support for the annual convention.

The event is renowned for connecting experts, industry leaders, and cooperatives from around the globe, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and experiences. With attendees expected from 42 countries across six continents, the 2024 edition aims to foster a collaborative atmosphere conducive to exploring new opportunities within the financial cooperative sector.

Simon Chelugui, the Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and MSMEs Development, accepted the responsibilities of hosting the congress in Gaborone, Botswana, last year. The event, under the theme “Cooperative model contributing towards UN Sustainable Development Goals,” underscores Kenya’s significant position in shaping the future of financial cooperatives in Africa and beyond.

The country will also host the Annual International Credit Union Regulators Network (ICURN) conference in July 2024, and preparations are in full swing. ICURN is a global Saccos’ regulators network that offers the opportunity for Sacco regulators to share experiences and learn from each other, showcase their regulatory models, discuss current regulatory thematic issues, share knowledge, and network. SASRA is a member of ICURN. Other members consist of supervisors from over 40 countries and jurisdictions from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, North America, and South America. The last ICURN Annual Conference was held in Washington, DC.

The two events will not just be an occasion for learning and knowledge exchange on SACCO regulation, but they should also be an opportunity to showcase and market Kenya as a premier tourism destination.
