Celebrating Cooperatives on Ushirika Day

Cooperatives across the globe will observe the International Day of Cooperatives under the theme “Cooperatives Building a Better Future for All.” As autonomous enterprises owned and democratically managed by individuals who willingly unite to fulfill their shared social, cultural, and economic needs, cooperatives play a key role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) by 2030. Their identity, values, and principles provide a robust framework for inclusive and sustainable growth, fostering unity among people from diverse backgrounds on equal footing.

The 2023 UN Secretary-General Report on Cooperatives in Social Development recognized the significant role cooperatives play in advancing the economic and social well-being of all individuals, including marginalized groups. Cooperatives consistently demonstrate their resilience in times of social and economic turmoil. The United Nations acknowledges the cooperative movement as a vital partner in accelerating sustainable development and urges its member states to bolster and reinforce the entrepreneurial ecosystems of cooperatives.

In November 2023, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/78/175 on cooperatives in social development, urging the declaration of 2025 as the International Year of Cooperatives. Cooperatives around the world are tirelessly working to create a better world, but they cannot do it alone. Here at Co-op News, our mission is to showcase their triumphs through comprehensive reports, articles, digital campaigns, corporate photographs, and videos. Co-op News offers cooperators and public a platform to learn and connect with their cooperatives. Co-op News highlights the cooperative identity and illustrates how this model has made tangible contributions toward creating a better world. We tell the world that cooperatives prioritize people. We share stories of cooperatives’ resilience, sound business strategies, and committed leadership, which have enabled struggling cooperatives to regenerate and flourish.

Our readership continues to swell each month with thousands of subscribers. Our online and offline platforms have continuously expanded, attracting millions of viewers and readers. Co-op News will persist in telling the tale of Africa’s burgeoning Cooperative Movement, directly serving millions of members. We emphasize that the funds saved in a SACCO are as secure as those saved in a bank while advocating for strict measures against a minority of individuals’ intent on smearing the commendable work being undertaken by the majority of cooperatives.

This Ushirika Day, we celebrate cooperatives by spotlighting success stories from members and cooperative societies. Enjoy reading your favorite Co-op News magazine, your comprehensive cooperative journal.CLICK & READ  CO-OP NEWS
