Cooperative Leaders Push Community Empowerment and Financial Inclusion at 2024 SACCA Congress

The 2024 SACCA Congress, organized by the African Confederation of Cooperative Savings and Credit Associations (ACCOSCA), wrapped up on October 28, 2024, at the ACCOSCA Academy in Nairobi. The event attracted over 2,000 delegates from 42 countries, including cooperative leaders, financial experts, and policymakers, who gathered to discuss the vital role of cooperatives in addressing pressing socio-economic challenges across Africa.

During an exit meeting at ACCOSCA’s headquarters, members of the Congress’s technical working group reflected on the significant achievements of the event. Patrick Kilemi, public secretary for cooperatives, expressed gratitude to the organizing committee, highlighting their dedication and active engagement that were crucial to the Congress’s success. “We witnessed an overwhelming turnout and meaningful contributions from across the globe, underscoring the power of collaboration,” Kilemi stated.

The Congress centred on the cooperative movement’s critical role in driving financial inclusion and supporting underserved populations, particularly in rural areas of Africa. Key discussions focused on building resilient communities through innovative savings and credit approaches and strategies aimed at economically and socially empowering members. The event reinforced the collaborative model where cooperatives function as both financial and social safety nets, especially in regions with limited access to financial services.

ACCOSCA’s leadership received accolades for the seamless organization of the Congress, which included interactive sessions, workshops, and panels addressing the unique challenges faced by cooperatives and their members. Their dedication to promoting the cooperative movement has set a new standard, inspiring a cooperative spirit essential for tackling shared community challenges.

A prominent theme throughout the Congress was the importance of global cooperation in addressing socio-economic issues. Participants exchanged insights and strategies, solidifying the role of cooperatives as effective tools for transformation. The event not only strengthened a network of like-minded professionals but also provided a platform for the exchange of ideas and the establishment of actionable plans for sustainable development.
