The prestigious award was conferred during the national Ushirika Day awards ceremony, where Ports Sacco proudly secured seven prestigious trophies, firmly establishing itself as one of the nation’s premier financial cooperatives.
The awards ceremony, which took place at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, was graced by Dr. Wycliffe Oparanya, the Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and MSMEs. Through exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication to providing superior financial services that enhance the lives of its members, Ports Sacco has continuously soared to the pinnacle of the cooperative movement.
During the national Ushirika Day celebration, Ports Sacco received accolades for being the third-best managed Sacco nationwide, the second-best managed DT Sacco, and the third-best in deposits management and risk management DT Sacco, all within the employer-based Saccos tier 2 category. Additionally, it was honored for being the third most improved DT Sacco in the same category. Ports Sacco also claimed victory in the best capitalization and technology optimization DT Sacco in the employer-based category, further solidifying its position as an industry leader.
In addition, Ports Sacco was honoured with a total of seven Ushirika Day awards during the celebrations in Mombasa, recognizing its outstanding contributions to the community and uplifting people. The Deposit Taking Sacco was recognized across various categories, securing accolades for Best Cooperative Society, Best Capitalization, Best in Education and Training, Highest Returns on Assets, and First to Present Audited Accounts. It also clinched the second Best in Credit Management and the third Most Innovative Sacco awards.

As a tier 1 licensed deposit-taking Sacco regulated by the Sacco Society Regulatory Authority (SASRA), Ports Sacco has consistently upheld its mission of uplifting people since 1966. For a long period, the Sacco has been leading in offering the highest dividends to its members, coupled with easy access to affordable loans. In a move that underscored its robust financial health, early this year the Sacco delighted its members with a 20% dividend rate, a testament to its outstanding performance in 2023.
Ports Sacco has always maintained healthy growth performance indicators with the latest SASRA’s Sacco Supervision Annual Report 2023 ranking it 28th largest DT Sacco in the country with an asset base of Ksh9.17 billion, total deposits of Ksh5.28 billion and gross loans of Ksh6.23 billion. The Sacco is also among the country’s most profitable cooperatives with the report indicating that it posted a total income of Ksh1.24 billion last year.
The Sacco has continually distinguished itself by delivering services and products that are not only competitive but are also tailored to the ever-evolving market demands. This strategy has propelled its growth upwards consistently. In an effort to stay relevant and more appealing to its members, it has undergone rebranding, aligning better with the dynamic needs of its members while setting its sights on a significant membership increase. Its management aims to boost its numbers from just over 10,500 to more than 50,000 in the next five years, with plans to extend its reach to new regions to strengthen its market presence.
Recognized as one of the nation’s most financially secure DT Saccos, Ports SAcco boasted a liquidity ratio of 236.90% according to SASRA Annual Supervision Report 2022.
As the leader in technology optimization, the Sacco management has elevated its digital platforms by incorporating a new mobile application and USSD codes. Furthermore, the Sacco launched a members’ portal that encourages participation from the diaspora through online registration and transactions.
