A scintillating celebration unfolded as thousands of co-operative members and stakeholders gathered at the iconic Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) Grounds in Nairobi for the National 2025 Ushirika Day in July. This remarkable event was not just a gathering; it was a powerful representation of unity, purpose, and the unwavering commitment to the fundamental values underpinning Kenya’s co-operative movement.
Representatives from a rich tapestry of co-operative societies, distinguished government officials, and influential leaders came together to honour the spirit of collaboration and mutual support that defines this dynamic sector.
It was a show of might that co-ops are transforming Kenya. The atmosphere was electric, adorned with colorful decorations that mirrored the growing impact of co-operatives in the nation. This year’s theme, “Driving Inclusive and Sustainable Solutions for a Better World,” resonated deeply, underlining co-operatives’ essential role in promoting social inclusion, advancing economic equity, and championing environmental sustainability.
Co-operatives stand as robust vehicles for economic empowerment and community betterment. Cooperative members gain access to vital financial services, enhance their livelihoods, and cultivate resilient communities by pooling their resources and sharing risks. The Ushirika Day celebrations provided not only a platform to share inspiring success stories but also an opportunity to recognize exceptional co-operative societies that have made immense contributions to the movement. The day’s crowning moment was the gala dinner ceremony that recognized and honoured the top-performing co-operative societies for their excellence.
To ensure a fair and thorough evaluation, the Co-operative Alliance of Kenya (CAK) enlisted Co-op Consultancy & Bancassurance Intermediary (CCBI) to oversee the adjudication process for the Co-operative Societies. The aim was clear: to highlight those who excelled in various management domains during the financial year 2024.
Co-operative societies were evaluated across multiple award categories, including Best in Capitalization, Best in Deposits Management, Best in Credit Management, Most Efficient, Best in Risk Management, Best in Technology Optimization, Most Improved, and Best in Member Management. These awards were further broken down by sector—ranging from Employer-based Saccos to Agriculture-based Saccos, Community-based Saccos, and Housing and Marketing Societies—as well as by their license status, including Deposit Taking (FOSA) and Non-WDT Sacco.
