Senegal Celebrates AFCON Victory, but Original Trophy Remains with CAF

Senegal’s historic victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) sparked a wave of national pride, but fans should note that the original trophy will remain in the hands of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Following a thrilling 1-0 victory over Morocco in the final, Senegal lifted the trophy in celebration of their second continental title. However, CAF regulations stipulate that only nations winning the tournament three times are entitled to keep the original trophy permanently. Having secured titles in 2021 and 2025, Senegal remains one win shy of that milestone.

CAF’s policy is designed to preserve the original trophy as a symbol of African football heritage. While the champions are awarded an official replica and individual medals to commemorate their achievement, the original returns to CAF headquarters. This ensures continuity and respect for the tournament’s history, which has inspired millions for decades.

Speaking after the final, Senegalese Football Federation officials expressed immense pride in the team’s accomplishment. “Holding the original trophy, even for a few moments, was unforgettable,” said one official. “We know the replica will carry that same spirit back home to Senegal.”
