Kewisco Sacco; Where Conservation Meets Wealth Creation
We did not start with billions. We started with a shared belief — that people who protect Kenya’s wildlife deserve a financial institution that protects their futures. In 1991, a group of Kenya Wildlife Service employees came together with modest means and a clear purpose: to pool their savings, support one another, and build something lasting. More than three decades later, that something is Kewisco NWDT Sacco, and what we have built together is remarkable.
This year, as the global cooperative movement gathers to mark the International Day of Cooperatives under the theme Cooperatives for a Peaceful World, our story feels particularly resonant. Cooperatives, the International Cooperative Alliance reminds us, are bridge-builders — institutions that bring communities together, foster dialogue, and strengthen resilience in a fragmented world. That is precisely what Kewisco has done, quietly and consistently, since its founding.
We began as a financial safety net for KWS employees. Rangers, wardens, conservationists — people whose daily work demanded sacrifice — needed a place where their savings were safe and credit was within reach. We were that place. But our vision did not stop at the KWS gate.
Over the years, we opened our doors wider. Today, our membership extends to the general public, SMEs, and corporate entities across Kenya. A schoolteacher in Malindi, a small business owner in Watamu, a young professional building their first investment portfolio — all find a home with us. This expansion is not simply a growth strategy. It is a statement of values: that financial empowerment belongs to every Kenyan, regardless of profession or background.
Our mission captures this precisely. We exist to empower members through the mobilisation of savings and the provision of affordable, market-driven financial solutions for growth and wealth creation. Every product we design, every branch we open, and every digital feature we launch flows from that commitment.
Our product range reflects the full breadth of our membership’s ambitions. Through both BOSA and FOSA offerings, members access personal loans, education financing, agribusiness support, and asset acquisition solutions. Whether a member is building a family home, funding a child’s university education, or scaling a business, we provide the leverage to make it possible.
We are particularly proud of our digital progress. Through Kewisco Pap, our mobile platform, members save, borrow, and track their financial goals anytime, anywhere. Technology has not changed who we are — it has extended how far we can reach. And in a country where connectivity is rapidly reshaping financial access, we are determined to lead.
With member deposits approaching Ksh 2 billion, our financial base is healthy and growing. But behind that figure are thousands of individual dreams — homes under construction, school fees paid on time, businesses that started as ideas and became livelihoods.
In 2025, the wider cooperative sector took notice. Kewisco NWDT Sacco won the award for Best Sacco in Capitalisation at the Ushirika Awards, under the Large and Medium Employer-Based NWDT Saccos category. It was recognition built on years of efficient leadership, credible financial management, and an unwavering commitment to member-centred service. We remain fully compliant with SASRA guidelines, safeguarding member deposits while strengthening governance for the long term.
Our responsibility extends beyond the balance sheet. Through CSR programmes, we invest in environmental conservation — fitting, given our roots in wildlife protection — alongside education sponsorships and health outreach in the communities we serve. Members from Watamu, Arabuko, and Malindi stations continue to engage actively in our financial education sessions, strengthening the informed, empowered Kewisco family we are collectively building.
CoopsDay 2026 marks the 104th International Cooperative Day and the 32nd UN International Day of Cooperatives. Its theme — Cooperatives for a Peaceful World — speaks directly to what we do every day. When people save together, borrow fairly, and share in each other’s growth, they build more than wealth. They build trust. They build community. They build peace.
We started with conservation. We are growing with purpose. And together, we are just getting started. Growing together.
