Internal Auditor

Wevarsity SACCO Society Limited is a SASRA-licensed deposit-taking co-operative society offering savings, credit, and related financial services to its members. In line with our commitment to strong corporate governance, sound risk management, and effective internal controls, we seek to recruit a qualified, self-driven, and highly principled individual to fill the position of Internal Auditor.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting functionally to the Board of Directors through the Audit Committee and administratively to the Chief Executive Officer, the Internal Auditor will provide independent and objective assurance on the adequacy and effectiveness of the SACCO’s internal controls, risk management, and governance processes, while evaluating compliance with policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements, including SASRA regulations and the Co-operative Societies Act.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement a risk-based annual internal audit plan for approval by the Board Audit Committee.
  • Conduct periodic financial, operational, ICT, compliance, and credit/portfolio audits across the SACCO.
  • Evaluate the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls, segregation of duties, and governance processes.
  • Review compliance with SASRA regulations, the Co-operative Societies Act, Board resolutions, and internal policies.
  • Assess credit appraisal, approval, monitoring, recovery, restructuring, and provisioning processes, and review PAR monitoring and loan classification.
  • Review ICT controls, systems security, data integrity, and business continuity arrangements, including controls over the core banking system.
  • Investigate suspected fraud, irregularities, policy breaches, and unethical conduct, and undertake special reviews as directed by the Audit Committee or Board.
  • Prepare clear, objective, and timely audit reports, present findings to Management and the Audit Committee, and follow up on implementation of audit recommendations.
  • Review HR processes — recruitment, payroll, leave, staff benefits, and disciplinary matters — for compliance with policy and statutory requirements.
  • Liaise with regulators, external auditors, and other assurance providers, while preserving audit independence.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA-K) and a Member of ICPAK in good standing.
  • Professional certification such as Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) or equivalent will be an added advantage.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ relevant experience in a SACCO or financial institution environment, with at least three (3) years in an internal audit role.

SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES

  • Strong knowledge of SASRA regulations, the Co-operative Societies Act, and prudential guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct risk-based audits and internal control reviews, with excellent analytical and report-writing skills.
  • Sound understanding of core banking systems and automated SACCO operating environments, most preferably Vanguard Financial Software.
  • High level of integrity, professional independence, and ethical conduct.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, with the ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, with emphasis on Word and Excel.
