Saccos Help Bridge Kenya’s SME Financing Gap

93 Kenyan SMEs have secured a combined US$2.5 million in financing through a one-year initiative led by the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) and Worldwide Foundation of Credit Unions (WFCU).

The programme worked with Unaitas, Boresha SACCO and Kenya Police SACCO, alongside the ACCOSCA Academy, to strengthen SACCOs’ capacity to finance businesses often overlooked by traditional banks.

The initiative trained SACCO staff to assess SMEs based on cash flow, business prospects and repayment capacity—not just collateral.

The results are encouraging: the 93 SMEs maintained non-performing loans below 1%, demonstrating that better risk assessment can unlock financing while maintaining portfolio quality.

The programme also developed five training manuals to support continued SME lending capacity across the SACCO sector.
