The latest Sacco Supervision Annual Report, 2021 shows membership in saccos grew by about 3%.
According to SASRA membership in SACCOs remain an important performance and growth monitoring matrix, because as cooperative enterprises, SACCOs transact and undertake business only with the members. Thus, the more the members, the higher the clientele and customer base.
During the year ended December 2021, there was a marginal increase of 3.03% of the membership in SACCOs from 5.82 million members reported in 2020 to 5.99 million members in 2021. A large proportion of the members numbering 1.18 million were however reported as dormant implying that they had not conducted any transactions with their respective SACCOs for more than six (6) months.
The 49-Agriculture-based SACCOs had the majority of the members representing 46.79% of the total membership followed by the 117-Government-based SACCOs which had a proportion of 35.39% of the total members. The Government-based SACCOs comprised of 40-Teachers-based; 26-State Corporations based; 10-Universities (public) based; 10-County government based; and 31-Government general services based, whose proportion of members was 22.61%, 3.40%, 0.37%, 1.64%, and 7.36% respectively.
