Today, Nairobi witnessed a remarkable display of unity and environmental responsibility as various Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (SACCOs) came together to celebrate Environmental Day in preparation for the 103rd International Day of Cooperatives, which will be observed on July 5th and 12th this year. The theme for this year’s Ushirika Day is “Cooperatives: Driving Inclusive and Sustainable Solutions for a Better World.” Members and officials from different SACCOs and other stakeholders gathered at Jamhuri Show Ground to plant thousands of trees, reinforcing their commitment to sustainable development.
“Today, we gather not only to plant trees but to sow the seeds of a greener, healthier future for generations to come. SACCOs are committed to environmental stewardship, proving that financial growth and sustainability can go hand in hand. Together, we are making the world a better place, starting with every tree we plant today,” said Mrs. Dolphine Aremo, the director of cooperatives for Nairobi County.
The event, organized by the Cooperative Alliance of Kenya (CAK), brought together cooperative leaders, members, and environmental advocates, all working side by side to contribute to Kenya’s national reforestation goals. From youth-led SACCOs to long-established financial cooperatives, participants emphasized that collective action is essential in addressing the climate crisis. Many attendees spoke passionately about the role that cooperatives play not only in economic empowerment but also in environmental stewardship.
As shovels broke through the soil and seedlings took root, SACCO members pledged to maintain the trees and encourage others to join the green movement. With each tree planted, the cooperatives fulfilled the day’s theme, demonstrating that when communities unite with a shared purpose, they can indeed build a better, greener world.
