How GWLN Grants Empowered Dairy Farmers in Kenya

The Global Women’s Leadership Network (GWLN) has shared the outcomes of its 2023 Empowerment Grant initiatives, which supported over 760 individuals in Kenya and Mongolia. These efforts increased the incomes of Kenyan farmers by 20% and provided 112 Mongolian credit union leaders with training in sustainable finance, advancing economic empowerment and sustainability in rural communities.

Led by Enkhchimeg Nergui, Partnership Specialist at the Mongolian National Confederation of Credit Unions, and Violet Ndungu, CEO, Muki SACCO in Kenya, the projects demonstrated the transformative potential of targeted financial support and capacity building.

The grants, valued at $10,000 each, funded innovative projects aimed at enhancing social impact, uplifting underserved groups, and expanding financial inclusion. Implemented from September 2023 to July 2024, these projects supported sustainable development goals and created new opportunities for women and youth.

Transforming Dairy Farming in Kenya

The Kenyan project, spearheaded by Muki SACCO, focused on commercializing dairy farming operations to boost production and income for smallholder farmers. Key outcomes included:

  • Farmer Training and Group Formation: More than 700 farmers participated in training sessions on modern dairy practices, including feed production, veterinary care, and effective farm management. The formation of 73 farmer groups enhanced collaboration and knowledge sharing.
  • Introduction of New Financial Products: A specialized loan product was developed to meet the specific needs of farmers, such as purchasing water tanks and chaff cutters. This innovation has increased access to essential resources, thereby improving operational efficiency.
  • Improved Dairy Production and Incomes: Milk production expanded by 25%, and farmers’ incomes increased by 20%, contributing to enhanced financial security and community prosperity.
  • Creating Dignified Work for Women: Training and support enabled women farmers to transition from subsistence farming to commercial operations, fostering stable income streams and promoting economic independence. These efforts bolstered a stronger sense of agency and economic participation among women in the community.

By equipping farmers with the tools and knowledge necessary to sustain their operations, the project has strengthened Muki SACCO and contributed to long-term economic growth in the region.

A Legacy of Empowerment

Since its inception in 2014, GWLN Empowerment Grants has funded impactful projects worldwide, focusing on financial inclusion, gender equality, and leadership development. The 2023 initiatives reflect GWLN’s commitment to fostering sustainable solutions through cooperative efforts and community engagement.

“These grants are a testament to the remarkable achievements that can be realized when female leaders are empowered to address the unique challenges in their communities,” said GWLN Director Eleni Giakoumopoulos. “The success of these projects underscores the transformative power of cooperation and innovation.”
