Safaricom Sacco emerged as the winner of the 2022Champions of Governance (COG) Co-operative Sector award. The Sacco demonstrated excellence in governance to emerge as the best in the category. The award points to the Sacco’s highest standards of practice of prudent management in line with its vision of being the financial partner of choice and mission of transforming members’ lives through the provision of affordable innovative and accessible Financial Services.
It also scooped the second runners-up trophy for the Champion of Governance Award while the Sacco CEO Joseph Njoroge won the first runners-up award for the CEO of the Year category.
The COG Award aims at promoting practices in good governance by recognising of practice and application of good governance in both the public and private sector entities and encouraging organizations to remain innovative while focusing on enhancing good governance.
Now on its Eleventh Edition, the COG in 2022 was competitive attracting many entries from the leading organizations across the country.
Safaricom Sacco took home three awards, a show of how the Society has to embed good governance practices for transformational financial services. It is indeed the premier centre of excellence in governance promotion.
In addition to the COG award, the Sacco was recently voted among the best in health and wellness initiatives in CSR 100 AWARDs.
It also achieved a Gold Mark on digital awards winning recognition for excellence in enterprise in dx100 awards that seeks to identify and recognize 100 organizations that have used technology to impact their business goals.
During Ushirika Day celebrations, Safaricom Sacco was crowned with two awards including the Best in Technology Optimization and the third best in Risk Management DT Sacco, employer-based, Tier 1 category.
Digital Transformation
The Sacco remains the leader in technology optimization having shifted 90% of all its transactions to Digital Channels.
Most of the Sacco’s transactions take place in alternative channels away from the traditional brick-and-mortar branches, with over 90% of its members being active on digital channels.
“The investments we continue to make to enhance our digital capabilities have enabled us to continue serving our members safely and seamlessly despite the disruption occasioned by the pandemic,” said Mr Njoroge, CEO.
Earlier this year the Sacco Board Chairman Paul Msava said they will continue with the digital transformation journey with the goal of improving employees’ work processes to make them more efficient: and making it easier for members to access the Sacco’s products and services.
“New members have the ability to register to the Sacco seamlessly on i-Connect without filing manual forms. The short-term and long-term loan applications on i-Connect now include guarantor confirmations and refinancing of loan features. We are also able to do external bank transfers via pesalink on both iConnect and SafCIRI,” said Msava.
In 2021, the Sacco was awarded for its digital innovation scooping two awards-the CIO Africa Awards 2021 and the Mobile App Award for its SafCIRI App.
The Sacco’s innovation in service delivery coupled with prudent management has seen it soar high in growth ranking high in the Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA) annual rating. With over Ksh8.7 billion in total assets, Safaricom Sacco is among the country’s wealthiest DT Saccos.
“Innovation is the keyhole to our success. To adapt to the ever-changing trends, our products and services have also been evolving to meet the members’ diversified needs,” said Mr Njoroge.
The Sacco is among the few that offer mortgage (Faraji Home mortgage) facilities in partnership with Kenya Mortgage Refinance Company (KMRC).
