State Boosts Turkana Apiculture with 100-Beehive Donation

Bee farmers in Turkana Central and Loima sub-counties have received 100 beehives from the State Department of Livestock Development, marking a significant step toward commercializing apiculture in the region.

The beehives were officially handed over during a ceremony at the Turkana Central CDF offices by Livestock Development Principal Secretary Jonathan Mueke, Deputy Governor Dr. John Erus, and Loima Member of Parliament Dr. Protus Akuja. Also in attendance were County Commissioner Julius Kavita, Livestock Development Chief Officer Peter Eregae, and Director Bobby Ekadon.

Principal Secretary Mueke noted that the donation, valued at Ksh500,000, is intended as seed capital. He encouraged farmers to view the hives not just as a gift, but as a foundation for entering and expanding their presence in the lucrative honey sector.

Beyond apiculture, the PS highlighted the government’s broader commitment to the region’s livestock economy. He revealed that work is currently underway to fulfill a presidential directive to complete the Lomidat abattoir within the year. Once operational, the facility is expected to transform livestock trade and meat processing across Turkana.

Welcoming the support, Deputy Governor Dr. John Erus urged the beneficiary groups to maximize the resource. He noted that the bee and honey value chains have been identified as high-potential economic pillars capable of driving growth within the county and for the export market.
