Christine Makena sees no limits in executing her duties. The Ndosha Sacco Chief Executive Officer has her work cut-out to ensure the society maintains its leading position in Tharaka Nithi and beyond.
From the look of things, she has what it takes to be at the top.
She joined the,e Sacco in 2001 as a junior staff and has worked hard to be at the helm.
“I joined the Sacco as a teller in 2001 and in 2005 I was promoted to an accountant,” says Makena smile written all over her face.
Then, the Sacco, which was started off by Chogoria Hospital staff members, had few members but was yet to be registered by SASRA.
In 2011, the Sacco board appointed her as the CEO in an acting capacity for a few months before confirming her later.
“This was after my predecessor left and my performance satisfied the Board who later confirmed my appointment. We have had a good relationship with them,” says Makena who holds a Bachelor of Business Management
She is happy that since she took over office, the Sacco has made major milestones. Today the Sacco is SASRA licensed.
“We worked hard to ensure we met all requirements before we got the SASRA license in 2011,” she recalls.
“We moved into our new building in 2014. The ground floor is used as a banking hall while offices occupy the first floor. We now have enough space and looking forward to more expansion,” says Makena.
The Sacco membership has also grown by more than a double. It has a common bond that allows any member of community to join.
“Anyone can join the Sacco as we have products and services for all. We are also currently operating a consumer shop for dairy farmers within the town from where they can get what they need for their animals,” says the CEO.
She adds tea and coffee farmers are also well taken care off.

Does she have any challenges?
“As a mother, your family has its expectations while as the CEO, the Sacco too has the same. It is a challenge but I have to balance,” she says.
To remain up to date with modern technological advancement the Sacco has embraced the use of Sacco Link and Pay Bill number in offering services to members.
Her parting shot: “MY call is on co-operatives employees to embrace teamwork and work diligently while shunning politics in their activities.”
