Ardhi DT Sacco: 55 Years of Building Financial Stability

This year, as Kenya’s co-operative movement commemorated the International Day of Co-operatives under the theme “Co-operatives for a Peaceful World,” Ardhi DT Sacco took the opportunity to reflect on over five decades of transforming ordinary savings into extraordinary opportunities for its members.

The Sacco was established on October 5, 1971, initially serving the staff of the then Ministry of Lands and Settlement. More than fifty years later, this singular focus has evolved into a diverse membership drawn from various government ministries, private-sector institutions, groups, and qualified individuals. This transformation is a testament to the Sacco’s evolution into a “dynamic, inclusive financial powerhouse.”

The 2026 Ushirika Day, celebrated globally on July 4, marked a crucial moment for the Sacco sector. Co-operators across Kenya joined their counterparts worldwide in recognizing International Co-operative Day 104, with national celebrations in Nairobi and county events showcasing the sector’s contributions to sustainable development, governance, and social cohesion.

The Sacco sector is experiencing robust growth, with the total assets of regulated Saccos reaching Ksh1.21 trillion by December 2025, up from Ksh1.08 trillion the previous year. Membership now exceeds 7.4 million, with the sector contributing over 30 percent of Kenya’s GDP, establishing Kenya as one of the leading Sacco economies globally.

Ardhi DT Sacco’s performance aligns with this broader momentum. In 2025, the Sacco reported significant growth in total assets, attributed to bold product innovation, prudent financial restructuring, reduced loan interest rates, and strengthened risk management.

A key factor in this growth has been the Sacco’s strategic push into digital finance. The M-Ustawi and Premium Advance loan products have gained strong traction among members seeking fast, accessible credit. At the same time, its USSD platform and mobile banking channels provide services to members regardless of their location. Additionally, new offerings tailored for youth and small and medium enterprises have opened doors to previously underserved groups.

These innovations complement a well-established portfolio, including Development Loans for long-term investments, School Fees Loans to ensure children remain in school, Emergency Loans for unforeseen needs, and the Karibu Loan, designed specifically to welcome new members into the Sacco. Furthermore, Ardhi DT Sacco is forging strategic partnerships with fintech firms and development partners to expand its reach.

The Sacco believes that empowering members leads to stability—a principle that echoes this year’s global Ushirika Day theme. Stable members contribute to building stable communities, which in turn foster peace.

Ardhi DT Sacco’s milestones also reflect the ongoing reforms within the sector. Kenya’s Ministry of Co-operatives has tightened registration and governance regulations for new Saccos, as part of a broader initiative that includes a proposed Central Liquidity Facility and a deposit guarantee fund aimed at enhancing accountability and protecting member deposits across the industry.

As Ardhi DT Sacco celebrates 55 years of impactful service, it reaffirms its commitment to its members and its vision of being a vibrant Sacco that provides world-class financial solutions for generations to come.
