Mentor Sacco Bags Three National Awards for Member Empowerment, Digital Innovation

#AddingValueToLife

Mentor DT Sacco is not only adding value to members’ lives but is also being recognized for it.

The Sacco won three national Ushirika Day awards at the 2026 gala dinner, marking the 104th International Day of Cooperatives. It was named the best DT Sacco in member management, third-best in technology optimization, and third-best most-improved DT Sacco, all within the Employer-Based Saccos category for institutions with total assets between Ksh 10 billion and Ksh 30 billion.

The wins were not incidental. They reflect a deliberate strategy to add value to members’ lives, one that has earned the Sacco consistent recognition at both national and county levels.

A smile. A new business. A family’s future is secured. At Mentor DT Sacco, these are not abstract ideals but daily realities.

Five Decades of Growth

Founded in 1977, Mentor DT Sacco was built on ambitions that go beyond simple savings. Nearly 50 years later, it has grown into one of Kenya’s most outstanding financial cooperatives, a trajectory reflected both in its numbers and in the transformation of its members’ lives.

“Their affordable loans helped me establish myself and improve my financial status,” said Stonic Muchiro, a member. “The loan products are user-friendly and accessible to everyone. Mentor Sacco truly adds value to our lives.”

That sentiment, echoed across thousands of accounts, underpins the Sacco’s growth. In 2025, its loan book expanded 21 percent to Ksh 14.1 billion, while total assets rose 17.2 percent to Ksh 18.47 billion. Capital adequacy ratios met every threshold set by the regulator, the Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA). Behind each figure is an individual story: a teacher who launched a business, a civil servant who invested in property, a community welfare group that acquired land.

A Human-Centred Model

The Sacco’s financial performance rests on a deliberate governance philosophy. As a member-owned, not-for-profit cooperative, Mentor Sacco returns surplus funds directly to members through dividends, rebates, and interest on savings deposits. Members are treated as owners, not customers.

“Adding value to life is not just a marketing mantra; we live it,” said the Sacco Chairman, Mr Eliud Mbugua, adding, “Our operations are guided by a human-centred business model that prioritizes people over profit. This is what differentiates us.”

The Sacco’s mission to mobilize savings, provide credit, and support economic and social growth is carried out through a deliberately broad membership base spanning teachers, civil servants, security personnel, NGO workers, government employees, companies, welfare groups, and chamas. The model is inclusive by design, drawing people across institutional and social lines into a shared financial structure.

Operational Efficiency

As it approaches its 50th anniversary, Mentor Sacco is investing heavily in digital infrastructure to expand member value. The Sacco Chief Executive Officer, CPA Joyce Ndegwa, described the shift as strategic.

“By leveraging technology, we have reduced operational costs and channelled those resources toward improving member value and sustainability. We will continue to introduce user-friendly digital services as we march toward becoming a paperless Sacco,” she said.

The digitization drive is paired with a product portfolio built around real-world financial needs. The Instant Loan facility offers repayment terms of up to two years at 1 percent interest on a reducing balance. The Mazao Deposit product allows members to build savings incrementally. Business lending is structured around individual member profiles rather than standardized packages. Those are just a few of the Sacco’s innovative financial solutions.

“Our focus going forward remains sustainable growth, enhanced member value, regulatory compliance, and prudent risk management,” Ndegwa said.

This year’s International Day of Cooperatives carried the theme “Cooperatives for a Peaceful World.” For Mentor Sacco, the link between cooperative finance and social stability is not rhetorical: access to affordable credit reduces financial anxiety, stabilized household incomes ease domestic tension, and shared institutional ownership builds trust among members who might otherwise have little in common.

Nearly five decades after its founding, Mentor Sacco remains guided by the same purpose: equitable, structured financial inclusion. The Sacco is licensed and regulated by SASRA.
