Kenya National Police DT SACCO Mentors Youth to Prosperity

EMPOWERING FUTURES

The Kenya National Police DT SACCO organized a successful annual Mentorship, Support, and Coaching Program at the Nairobi Safari Club, a two-day event dedicated to resilient and brilliant students supported through its scholarship program.

With the inspiring theme “Maximizing Individual Potential for Educational Prosperity,” the program aims to uplift young stars by providing guidance, life skills, and hope, helping them to dream big and build brighter futures. The SACCO is committed to laying a strong foundation for academic excellence, hope, and opportunity, ensuring these students are equipped to achieve greatness. The Kenya National Police DT SACCO not only supports these students but also accompanies them on their journey toward a better tomorrow.

“I want to assure you that at any given time, don’t think of not having parents. At the Kenya National Police DT SACCO, you have parents who will take care of you until you succeed in life,” said Mr. David Mategwa, OGW, HSC, DSA, ICUDE, the SACCO National Chairman.

Mr. Mategwa applauded the Society’s Board of Directors, management, staff, facilitators, and stakeholders for their contributions to making the mentorship program a resounding success over the last decade.

“As a SACCO, we take pride in this scholarship program that not only supports but also mentors students, ensuring they are disciplined and poised for success in life. We have made it our commitment to support the children of deceased members from high school to university level,” Mr. Mategwa stated.

Last year, out of the 52 students under the SACCO scholarship program who sat for their KCSE exams, 50 qualified to join various universities. “This was a remarkable performance; we thank God. In fact, all students will be joining tertiary institutions,” Mr. Mategwa added.

The SACCO has sponsored 281 students, many of whom are pursuing successful careers both locally and abroad. “We pay close attention to students’ behaviour. We focus not only on passing exams but also on modelling them into good citizens, which leads to a successful life in the future,” emphasized the Chairman.

What started as a small initiative has evolved into a great success. According to Mr. Mategwa, they have steadily increased the budget to support more students.

One beneficiary of the program, Tia Sawe, who is studying psychology at the University of Nairobi, lauded the SACCO for helping him achieve his educational dreams. “The Kenya National Police DT SACCO has supported me since Form One, enabling me to attain good grades. They have also mentored me to be a role model for other students. I thank God that through the SACCO, my aspiration of becoming a psychologist has become possible. I look forward to changing the world,” he said.

Deborah Nyambura, another beneficiary studying at Starehe Girls, described the SACCO’s support as a blessing. “I don’t know where I would be right now. May God continue to bless them and increase their resources to help many other needy students. I aspire to be a lawyer in the future,” she said.

Mrs. Dolphin Aremo, Nairobi County Director of Co-operatives and the Chief Guest at this year’s event, commended the SACCO for initiating community-oriented Corporate Social Responsibility programs that change lives. She encouraged students to make full use of their opportunities to achieve their dreams.

“You are in charge of your own destiny. Goal setting and planning will assist you in your personal life. My expectation is that when you enter the job market, you will join a Cooperative,” said Mrs. Aremo.

CPA Moses Manyuanda, the General Manager of Finance and Banking at Kenya National Police DT SACCO, assured the students that they will continue to stand by them and guide them on their journey to prosperity. “We are proud to support these incredible students and walk with them on their journey,” added Mr. Franklin Tirimba, the SACCO GM of ICT and Business Innovation.

Concern for Community

Embracing the cooperative principle of concern for community, the SACCO has greatly supported community development. In its commitment to supporting educational activities, the SACCO presented eight laptops and 44 tablets to Utumishi Boys Academy for the top-performing students in the KCSE 2024 exams recently. The Academy achieved eight A students and 40 A- students, while Utumishi Girls Academy had four A- students. “We are pleased that the SACCO continues to support academic excellence. This will motivate other students,” said Dr. Maina Gitonga, Principal of Utumishi Boys Academy.

As part of its ongoing commitment to community engagement and sports development, the SACCO recently donated volleyball kits and equipment to the Kenya Airport Police Unit (KAPU) Volleyball Team. KAPU Commandant Mr. Bernard Korir expressed gratitude, acknowledging the SACCO’s role in fostering talent and teamwork within the police service, highlighting its belief in the power of sports to unite, inspire, and uplift communities.

Meanwhile, the SACCO also held the National Top Savers Seminar, where its top 100 savers gained insights from experts and financial coaches on managing their finances effectively, achieving long-term financial independence, and investing strategies for wealth and legacy creation. Co-operatives and MSMEs Development Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya was the guest of honour at the event, which was themed “Building a Secure & Strong Financial Future.”
